Our design system is currently based on the Yahoo brand fonts, though we’ve prioritized Yahoo Serif as our hero font, and opened up a wider variety of weights across the family. This has allowed for a refreshed and expanded take on the “traditional” Yahoo typographic voice.
Note: We also explore the use of fonts outside the Yahoo family in the instance of priority tent poles and special projects; however, this requires additional layers of approval from legal.
Yahoo News Visuals’ palettes are grounded in pop art as well as contemporary design trends, allowing us to convey a broad range of tones and emotions. We adhere to Yahoo’s core purples where applicable, while expanding beyond the Yahoo brand guidelines of accents and secondary colors.
Regarding the use of the Yahoo and Yahoo News logos, we follow the brand-wide guidance.
The layout system combines layers of text and imagery over an underlying modular grid made up of columns and rows. This system allows for a broad spectrum of tonalities and expressions, while keeping our design thoroughly readable and communicative.
Using this design system philosophy, and following a thorough audit of competing and favorited accounts and brands, we created a 3-tiered refresh of the Yahoo main and Yahoo News social channels. This refresh leverages our team for heavier-lift, bespoke executions, while also providing the social teams with a robust series of templates for quicker-turn trending and live content. The full palette of templates and their own mini-guide is available here.
Our recent refresh of the Yahoo News video gfx tool kit was designed in collaboration with our editorial and video ADs. It ensures visual continuity with our editorial and social channels, while providing additional features and flexibility specific to our video content needs. The kit is available here, and the guide is here.
