IMagery

What follows are our guiding principles for Yahoo News visual content in illustration, photography, and beyond.

1 ILLUSTRATIOn

Our editorial imagery should surprise and delight, prioritize a story’s emotion and tone, and still remain grounded in the Yahoo News core tenets of useful, relevant, and fun. Some additional illustration guidance is below:

  • An emphasis on collage
  • Foundationally rooted in pop art and contemporary design aesthetics
  • Friction between the digital and tactile
  • When in doubt, Emotion > Clever (but clever too whenever possible)
  • Expressive mark-making and graphic elements to enhance those emotions
  • Readability and immediate visual impact (with added layers of depth as needed and available)

2 external iLLUSTRATIOn

For longer-form stories, special projects, and instances where it makes sense to contract an artist with a connected background, special expertise, or an aesthetic especially related to a subject, we’ll bring in top 3rd party talent.‍

While serving the story comes first, we’re dedicated to building a richly diverse roster of contributors, as well as seeking out and showcasing new, young, and diverse talent.

3 portaits

Portraiture is where we will most heavily leverage the influence of pop art, both in terms of palettes, overlays, and mark-making accents.

4 photo

Our photography must be as dynamic and diverse as the range of stories we’ll explore across Yahoo News’ Authority Areas. We’ll prioritize humanity, intimacy, emotion, and action in our photo selection while continuing to ground our aesthetics in pop. What follows are best practices and examples for portraying the Yahoo News voice through photography.

  • Use our photography to reflect a diverse and inclusive world
  • Use images that balance clarity with a sense of naturalism
  • Use images with bold color, light  and composition that enhance a sense of “being there”
  • Prioritize imagery that communicates the facts of a story, as well as it’s emotional content and tone
  • Find imagery that balances both action and iconic composition whenever possible
  • Use images where the people have content-appropriate expressions and are making different gestures.
  • Use images from the same news event whenever possible.
  • Be sure to position the heads to be the same size and align from the chin and top of the head.
  • Emphasize pop and dynamic composition whenever possible with still lives. But remember to be mindful of the story’s tone.
